Arisi Paruppu Sadam Recipe – Kids Friendly Recipe – Rice and Dal Recipe

Arisi Paruppu Sadam is a South Indian dal and rice recipe, simple and quick to make, kids friendly recipe.

A rich protein dish, perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.

Step by step Arisi Paruppu Sadam Recipe

Wash properly dal and rice in water. Soak rice and dal together for at least 20 minutes. Drain water and keep aside.

Heat oil in a non stick pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon, cloves and bay leaf. When the cumin and mustard seeds start to sizzle, add curry leaves, pinch of hing and dried red chillies. Fry for 30 seconds.

Now add chopped shallots, garlic, ginger and green chilli. Stir fry until the shallot gets soft.

Add chopped tomato, sambar powder and turmeric powder. Mix all well and stir fry some minutes until tomato gets mushy.

Add dal, rice and 1/2 tsp salt or as per taste, stir and fry for 1 minute. Now add 3 and half cups of water, cover the pan with a lid and let it cook on medium flame. When the rice is cooked, turn off the flame and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and Arisi Paruppu Sadam is ready to serve!

Note:If you are out of time and want to use a pressure cooker, then pressure cook for 3 whistles and use 4 cups of water.

What you need

  • 1 tomato, chopped;
  • 2 red dried chillies;
  • 6 garlic cloves, chopped;
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, grated;
  • 1 green chilli, chopped;
  • 8 shallots, chopped;
  • 1 tsp sambar powder;
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder;
  • 1 inch cinnamon stick;
  • 3 cloves;
  • 1 bay leaf;
  • 1 spring curry leaves;
  • ½ cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped;
  • pinch of asafetida (hing);
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds;
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds;
  • 3 and ½ cups of water;
  • salt;
  • oil.
