Jeera rice (cumin rice) recipe

Jeera rice or cumin rice is such a simple dish to cook, yet delicious Indian recipe. It goes well with Indian curries and dal, such as moong dal, moong dal palak, methi dal, etc.

Ingredients:

2 cups basmati rice;
2 tbsp oil or ghee;
1 tbsp cumin seeds or caraway seeds (shahjeera);
1 onion, sliced;
1 mace (javitri);
4 cups water;
salt to taste.

Here’s how to make this simple and delicious jeera rice recipe:

Wash and soak the basmati rice in water for 10-15 minutes. Drain the water and keep aside.

Heat a pot on medium flame and add oil or ghee. Add sliced onions and let it fry until it turns light brown. Remove from oil and set aside on a paper towel.

In the same pot add 1tbsp cumin seeds and one mace (javitri). When the cumin seeds start to sizzle, add the soaked and drained rice and saute for one minute.

Add 4 cups of water and salt to taste, cover the pot and let the rice cook.

When jeera rice is cooked, turn off the flame and let it sit for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and fluff jeera rice with a fork.
